The Trainyard General Store – Practical Handcrafted Goods & Community Connections

The Trainyard General StoreWe love practical handcrafted goods & community connections.

The Trainyard General Store is a modern take on the classic country store, located in Downtown Dartmouth.

We are committed to supporting Makers & small businesses through our hybrid retail and creative space.

We carry beautiful, unique and practical goods, with the work of 126 Nova Scotians currently represented in store. Our selection continues to grow and change weekly so there is always something new to see!

We're a tad hard to find, sandwiched between the New Scotland Yard Emporium & The Portland Street Creperie in Downtown Dartmouth, NS. Our street address is Portland Street, but our entrance is located just off the Street in the parking lot stretching between Portland & Queen Street, across from Lawtons.

About us

The Trainyard General StoreWe both grew up in Nova Scotia, met and quickly fell in love at Saint Mary’s University before spending a few years in Ottawa moved home to Nova Scotia in 2015. By trade, Kimberley is an Early Childhood Educator and Jason works in IT Security. We got married at Murphy’s On The Water in 2014, and our wedding was crashed by a guy on a bike. That’s no joke.

Throughout the past few years we have become passionate about buying local, reclaimed and repurposed goods and have loved being able to meet the people making them. This passion combined with our shared love for projects and tinkering led us to the idea for a storefront, something that we have talked about off and on for a few years.

Early in the Spring of 2016 we became serious about making this dream come to life, falling hard for the potential of 53 Portland Street. We were in awe last Summer when we returned to find Downtown Dartmouth revitalized and are excited to join such a vibrant community of businesses.

As we started brainstorming for the Store we realized we wanted a space for Makers and customers to connect. This led to the Creative Space.

Our bright Creative Space is located at the back of the Store, and is used for workshops, coworking, community events and more! We'd love to chat with you about ideas for this space!

Coworking

We've partnered with ShftWork to offer our Creative Space for coworking & meetings, whenever it is not in use for workshops. We have 3 large tables, free wifi & a variety of materials available for use, all for $5 an hour. If you need a change we offer a great alternative to busy coffee shops, dining room tables & home offices.

Community Rentals

Are you a community group or non-profit? Our space is available for rent and functions great for meetings, team building or information sessions. Weekday rentals are readily available, at low rates. Evenings & weekends can be discussed.

Pop Up Shows
Makers spend a day (or up to a week!) in store showcasing a wider variety of goods,  allowing Makers and the community to connect!

Workshops

Many of the amazing Makers whose goods you’ll find in Store also lead workshops in our Creative Space.

Workshops are an exciting opportunity to learn new skills and spend an afternoon creating! The Makers leading our workshops are passionate about quality handmade goods and eager to share their talents with you!

If you’d like to see a specific project offered or to do a specific project as a private event (team building, wedding party, etc), let us know and we will try to make it happen!

Customer Reviews

- Recently I spent a morning in a class offered by a local artisan .. thank you to Trainyard General Store for providing the space and to Heidi who showed us the magic of sea glass creations

- I found out about this store during my Nocturne tour, and was so pleasantly surprised. The store has so much to offer in such a little space, but it's not crowded or disorganized. For everything sold being 100% local, they're a real game-changer in the area. I found some Christmas presents already, that were VERY reasonably priced for the quality, and I even got to chat with the owners, who put a hand-written thank you card in my bag after my purchase.
Glad to have you folks in the neighbourhood. I'll be back soon!

- Beautiful little store tucked away off of Portland street. Great and wonderful selections of local artesian made products. Very nice and friendly staff. Glad to support a local, small business like this!

- This store is the absolute cutest and they have a huge variety of locally made goods that would suit any taste or budget!
